According to iPod touch forums, the latest batch of iPod touch units are free of the faulty screens reported by many early buyers.
Due to a problem with the anti-reflective coating process, many of the first touch iPods to hit store shelves had an issue where the dark colours against a dark background would appear in negative colours. Apple was quick to admit to the problem, and is now shipping problem free iPod touch units.
The serial numbers of the faulty units can be identified if they follow the format 9C737xxxx, whereas the "good" touch iPods will have serial numbers of the form 9C738xxxx. Some reports also state that the problem free iPod touch units have singer Macy Gray featured on the box, however the serial number is still your best indication as to whether the iPod touch you are buying will have a faulty screen or not.
