"Negative Black" effect on new iPod touch screen
iPod touch screen worse than iPhone

If you've managed to get your hands on a new iPod touch, you may have noticed something a little "off" with the screen. While Apple's iPhone has a great screen with fairly true colours, and a wide viewing angle, reports are coming in from reviewers and purchasers complaining that the quality of the screen on the new iPod touch just isn't up to par.
As Apple-touch.com and iLounge report, comparisons of the new iPod touch with the iPhone show a marked difference when a video or image has dark colours against a black background. A "negative black" effect appears, where the dark foreground colour appears lighter than it should against the dark background. This shimmer is particularly noticeable at steeper viewing angles, where the screen display is further worsened by a green or blue tint throughout.
Compare the screen on the iPhone (top) and the iPod touch (bottom) and note the "negative black" effect on the central face.

While the original iPod video experienced a similar problem with the "negative black" issue, Apple's iPhone had a much improved picture quality. However, it would appear that the screen on the iPod touch is a technological step backwards, yet another on a growing list of concerns with the latest iPod.
